ゴルフ界隆盛の礎を築いたレジェンドたちの栄光を振り返る「Legends of Golf」。
ゴルフが誕生した年代については諸説あるが間違いなく150年は経過しているゴルフ。
今でこそ世界中で男・女・シニアのプロトーナメントが開催され、グローバルに成長しているが、現代のゴルフに至るまでには数々のレジェンドたちの活躍があった。
連載第1回は「ゴルフの王様」アーノルド・パーマーをご紹介しよう。

パーマーがニクラスよりも愛された理由
個性的なスイングで、果敢に攻め、どんなところからもナイスリカバリーで観客を沸かせた。
優勝回数では測れないパーマーのゴルフ界への貢献度
ゴルフ界のレジェンドについて触れるこのようなシリーズを始める場合、全英オープンの草創期に活躍したトム・モリスSrや、グランドスラムを達成しオーガスタナショナルGCやマスターズトーナメントを創設したボビー・ジョーンズ、根気強い練習と正確さを象徴するような人物であったベン・ホーガン、メジャーで最も活躍したジャック・ニクラスに至るまで、疑う余地のない選手たちから始めるのは極めて自然なことだ。
だが、ここでは、ゴルフ史上最多優勝選手ではないが、恐らくゴルフ史上最重要人物とみなされている男から始めることとする。
それは、3年以上前に心不全で亡くなったアーノルド・パーマーだ（享年87歳）。
彼は、メジャー7勝、PGAツアー62勝（同ツアー歴代第5位）を含め、確かに数多くの優勝を飾っているが最多選手ではない。
マスターズ4勝、全英オープン2勝を挙げているが、1960年の全米オープン優勝の際の猛チャージは、彼の多くのチャージの中でも最も有名なもの。
彼は1954年の全米アマでも優勝している。

貧しい生活からプライベートジェットを操縦する生活に
しかしながら、彼はゴルフという競技を大きな成功に導いた最大の功労者の1人だ。
パーマーは長い間、皆から愛されたが、全盛期には自らの攻撃的なプレースタイルや、たくましいテレビ向きの見栄えによって数多くのファンをゴルフに引き寄せた。
彼の人気は非常に高く、ファンの群衆は「アーニーズ・アーミー」と呼ばれるほどであった。
パーマーは、大恐慌が猛威を振るう直前の1929年9月10日に、ペンシルベニア州ラトローブでディーコン・パーマーとドリス・パーマー夫妻の間の5人の子どもの長男として生まれた。
アーノルドの父親は、町で新しいゴルフコースを建設する人夫の職に就き、その後グラウンドキーパーとしてとどまり、ついにヘッドプロにもなったが、これらのことが息子の運命を変えた。
パーマー家はこのラトローブCCのメンバーでなかったため、若き日のアーノルドはそこでプレーすることはできなかったが、それでもこの少年は、父親のコース管理作業を手伝う合間にラフのあちこちでゴルフボールを打っていた。

彼はゴルフの試合ではさほど大金を稼ぐことはなかったが、企業経営者としての収益によって財産を蓄え、ある日、一家が貧しかったためメンバーになれなかったラトローブCCや、フロリダ州オーランドにあるベイヒル・クラブ＆ロッジを買えるようになった。
彼は、ここで、最終的にアーノルド・パーマー・インビテーショナルとして知られるようになったPGAツアーのトーナメントを主催した。
パーマーは自家用機を所有した最初のゴルファーであるだけでなく、飛行機の操縦を学んだ最初のゴルファーでもあった。
パイロットであることは、彼にとってゴルフの次に純粋に楽しむことのできる第2の探求課題であった。
当時、世界一周の最速記録を樹立したこともあった。自ら操縦桿を握り、ツアーを転戦していたことは有名。
スポーツビジネス界のパイオニア
パーマーは、友人で弁護士のマーク・マコーマックの助けを得て、スポーツ選手のエンドースメント契約とスポーツの様相を一変させた。
マコーマックは、彼のビジネス面を代理する契約を締結した後、現在、巨大なスポーツマーケティング企業となっているIMGを設立したのである。
また、ライバルであるジャック・ニクラスやガードナー・ディキンソンとともに当時ツアーを運営していた全米プロゴルフ協会から1968年にPGAツアーを独立させ、男子プロの団体としての設立を裏方として助けた。
また、現在のグランドスラムのあり方を定めたのも、デンバーのチェリーヒルズにおける全米オープンでチャージの末、優勝したパーマーであった。
彼は4月にマスターズで優勝し、コロラドで勝利を収めた後に、マスターズ、全米オープン、全英オープン、全米プロの４大会が、アマチュアゴルフが優勢であった時代にボビー・ジョーンズが達成したグランドスラムに代わるものであるに違いないと考えるに至ったからである。
パーマーはサインをするとき「誰にでも読めるようなサインを書きなさい」と若手プロたちを指導。ファンを大事にする心は誰にも負けなかった。
親しみやすい大衆のヒーロー
生涯を通じて休むことなく慈善活動に励み、その名声にも関わらず、常に思いやりのある親しみやすい人物だったパーマー。
彼はサインを行なうためにいつも時間を確保し、そのことによりさらに大衆に愛されるようになった。
歴代の大統領とゴルフをプレーし、王族と食事をし、また、映画スターや企業経営者、他のスポーツのアスリートと友達になった。
彼は2004年にゴルファーとして初めて大統領自由勲章を授与され、2012年には議会名誉黄金勲章を授与された。
それでも、素朴な労働者階級の育ちから来るパーマーの親しみやすい性格は失われなかった。
プロゴルファーなら自ら進んでファンサービスは当たり前！
パーマーのニックネームは「キング（王様）」であったが、生前彼はこの呼称が気に入らなかった。
「そんな風に呼ばれると落ち着かないし、少しイライラする」と彼は言った
「お世辞のつもりで言われていることはわかるが、ゴルフのキングなど存在しない。ゴルフのアンバサダー（大使）と思われる方がよかった」
彼の遺言により、パーマーの遺灰は、最初の妻であったウィニーや彼の親と同じ、ラトローブCCの一角にまかれた。
その場所を示す記念碑はないが、彼がゴルフ界と人々に与えたもの、それが記念碑にほかならない。
2016年9月25日、87歳で逝去したパーマーの葬式には、大勢のプロゴルファーやゴルフ関係者が集まった。遺灰は遺言通り、空からラトローブCCに撒かれた。

When you start a series, like this one, writing about the legends of the game, it’s only natural to perhaps start with any number of obvious candidates—from Old Tom Morris in the first days of the British Open, to Bobby Jones, who won the grand slam and founded Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, Ben Hogan, a mystical figure of dogged practice and precision, or Jack Nicklaus, the game’s greatest major championship player.
But, no, we start with a man who was not the winningest in golf history, but who has been described by many, including his fiercest rival, as perhaps the most important in the annals of the game. That would be Arnold Palmer, who died a little more than three years ago at the age of 87 due to heart failure.
Palmer indeed won plenty in his career, including seven major championships and 62 PGA TOUR titles, the fifth-highest win total in TOUR history. He won four Masters, two Open Championships and the 1960 U.S. Open, a victory that embodied his most famous charge among many. He also captured the 1954 U.S. Amateur.
But he won even more in ways that made golf a huge winner, too.
Palmer was beloved throughout his long career, but in his heyday, he drew legions of fans to the game with his swashbuckling style of golf and rugged and telegenic good looks. His popularity was so vast that his legions of fans were simply known as Arnie’s Army.
Born Sept. 10, 1929, in Latrobe, Pa., just before the depression hit in full force, Palmer was the first of four children of Deacon and Doris Palmer. Arnold’s father set his son’s destiny in motion when he took a laborer job building a new golf course in town and then was retained as the groundskeeper and, eventually, also became head professional. That was Latrobe Country Club, where the young Arnold wasn’t allowed to play – the Palmer’s were not members – but where the youngster still would slash golf balls around in the rough when he wasn’t helping his father with the upkeep of the course.
“Golf was always my constant companion, and I never stopped learning from the game,” Palmer once said, “and I never stopped loving the game.”
Palmer didn’t make that much money from golf, but his earnings as a corporate pitchman helped him to amass a fortune that enabled him to one day buy Latrobe Country Club – the place his family was too poor to belong to – and Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Fla., where he hosted a PGA TOUR event that eventually became known as the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He not only was the first golfer to own his own airplane, but the first to learn to fly it, and being a pilot was his second pursuit of pure enjoyment after golf.
Palmer, with the help of friend and lawyer Mark McCormack, changed the face of athlete endorsement deals and sports. McCormack founded what is now the giant sports marketing agency, IMG, after a handshake agreement to represent Palmer in his business affairs.
Along with his rival, Nicklaus, and Gardner Dickinson, Palmer helped in the formation of the modern PGA TOUR organization in 1968 by working more behind the scenes to arrange the split of the players’ association from the PGA of America, which ran the tour at the time.
And it was Palmer who identified what is the modern grand slam after he charged to victory in the U.S. Open at Cherry Hills in Denver. Palmer had won the Masters in April, and after his triumph in Colorado, he mused that a rotation of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship should, perhaps, supplant the grand slam Bobby Jones won in his day when amateur golf ruled. (Jones won the Open and Amateur championships of the U.S. and Britain in 1930.)
Throughout his life, Palmer was a tireless champion of charitable causes, and he was forever a gracious and approachable person despite his celebrity, someone who always made time to sign autographs, which endeared him even more to the public. He played golf with presidents, dined with royalty and was befriended by movie stars, corporate leaders and athletes from other sports. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, the first golfer ever to receive the honor, and the Congressional Gold Medal in ’09.
Yet he never lost his common touch, a product of a simple, working-class upbringing.
He was nicknamed “The King,” with which he never was comfortable. “At times, it has made me uncomfortable and even a bit irritated to be referred to that way,” he said. I know it was meant to be flattering, but there is no king of golf. I preferred to be thought of as an ambassador of the game.”
Per stipulations in his will, Palmer joined his first wife, Winnie, and his parent in having his ashes spread at a specific location at Latrobe Country Club. There is no monument marking the spot.
His monuments are simply what he gave to golf and to people.
